You did not get to Senior Manager, Director, or VP by accident.
You worked hard. You delivered results. You built real expertise. And somewhere along the way, you earned the title to prove it.
So why does the next level feel so difficult to reach? Why does a career plateau hit so many capable leaders?
Here is what most leadership books will not tell you.
The skills that got you here are not the same skills that will carry you forward.
And the gap between where you are and where you want to be is almost never technical.
It is human.
Let me explain.
You Are Being Assessed Right Now
Every day, the people around you are making assessments about you.
Your manager. Your peers. Your direct reports.
The senior leaders you interact with once a quarter.
They are not assessing your technical expertise.
They already assume that is there.
What they are assessing is something different.
They are asking themselves:
Can I trust this person?
Do they do what they say they will do?
When things go sideways, how do they show up?
Are they someone I want to sponsor, promote, and put in front of my stakeholders?
These are assessments of your integrity, your reliability, your sincerity, and your competence.
And they are happening whether you are aware of them or not.
Most leaders are not aware of them.
And that unawareness is quietly costing them.
The One Shift That Breaks a Career Plateau
Here is something I teach every leader I work with.
Your results are a direct product of your observations.
Not your actions. Your observations.
Think about it this way.
When you are not getting the results you want, what do you do?
Most leaders change their actions.
They try a new approach, a new process, a new communication style.
Sometimes that works. Often it does not.
Because the problem is not the action.
It is the lens through which you are seeing the situation.
The most effective leaders learn to examine their observations before changing their actions.
They ask:
What am I missing?
What assumptions am I making?
How is my current mood affecting my thinking?
When you shift how you observe, you open up a completely new set of actions.
And those new actions produce different results.
This single shift, from changing actions to examining observations, is one of the most powerful moves a senior leader can make.
And almost no one has been formally taught how to do it.
Three Things You Can Do This Week
You do not need a full leadership development program to start applying these ideas.
Here are three things you can do right now.
First, pick one commitment you have made in the last 30 days and ask yourself honestly: did I deliver exactly what I said I would, by the time I said I would, without someone having to follow up?
If the answer is no, that is your starting point.
Second, the next time you find yourself frustrated by a recurring problem, stop before you change your approach.
Spend ten minutes writing down how you have been observing the situation.
What assumptions have you been making?
What might you be missing?
Then decide what to do.
Third, ask yourself this question: when did I last make a proactive offer to a senior stakeholder, not respond to a request, but actually initiate a valuable idea?
If you cannot remember, that is important information about how the organization currently sees your role.
Small shifts. Real results.
Want to Go Deeper?
These three ideas are just the beginning.
